Except that if you give it away free (on your website or Smashwords), you can't sell it on Kindle (well, you can, but if they find out, they'll set your royalty at zero).
A limited time promotion with a coupon at SM seems to be fine - then include a paypal or Amazon donation button on your website, along with links to the Kindle (or other store) versions, which the person could purchase to contribute.
It's more likely, of course, that giving away a free book will result in purchase of future books, than the use of any of the above means to attempt to collect after the fact. Do enough of this and you can get a traditional publishing contract or an AmazonEncore one (or just make a living).
