I lost my money for a device that is broked again (second time in less that an year) and I remember who was defending iRex for WRONG choices and bad support for the consumers.

I also had black lines at the top of my screen for about 1 or 2 years. I noticed they disappeared now and then. And as there seemed to be a relation to a button (the 2nd from above), I took courage and disassembled my Iliad.
I bent the long circuitboard parallel to the page-bar a little, by putting a piece of paper, a few times folded, at the edge, so it puts it under a little bit of strain and now my screen looks like brand new!
It appears to me the black line problem is caused by the manifacturing process. I am quite happy again with my Iliad, although it is quite slow (maybe because of battery-saving). I have the very primitive Epub-reader on board - wish it did a better job - no margins, no formatting at the moment.
I found out about Calibre (very nice program). It can convert e-book formats.
So I am enthusiastic again. I was one of the early owners of an Iliad.
