When I was 9-10 I loved Victor Kelleher books. His YA (as opposed to the later children's work) was a bit dark, a bit creepy, but not horrible. The two I reread in the last few years were Taronga (post-apocalyptic, centred around Sydney and its Taronga Zoo) and Papio (about a boy in Africa who makes friends with a captive gorilla, sets him free, then has to deal with the fallout). I think I liked the realism - gritty but not overboard.

Looks as though his stuff isn't available in ebook form yet. On the bright side, it IS available on Amazon - I wasn't sure that'd be the case, given he's an Aussie author.
