What about Patricia C Wrede (her Enchanted Forest series is available as ebooks) or Tamora Pierce? I read both of these authors as a young teenager (and still like them today).
Another option is Mercedes Lackey - some may suit a slightly older child, but some would be OK, especially the 500 kingdoms stories and elemental masters stories (both of which are based around fairy tales, but with strong characters - no wimpy girly girls!)
