For free-hand annotations, the Sony devices are excellent. For typed annotations, the Kindle has the edge, with its keyboard (although it can't annotation PDF files). Others worth considering are the Neo/Onyx.
The iRex DR800 range has no annotation capability at all at present. The DR1000 does, but only for PDF. Bear in mind, though, that iRex in currently in administration, and their future is rather uncertain.
