Correct. The pdfread program actually converts pdf files to landscape mode on this device that are intended to be read 2 pages for 1 pdf page.

It only reads its internal format. It does an automatic conversion of .imp files to its internal format but only this one format. It is best to reformat text files anyway to get them to paginate properly and not end up with a lot of sloppy right margins. This reader is for books. It provides a good reading experience in mimicking a book with page changes, etc.
You can use drag and drop conversions if you want speed in conversion. But you may want to do simple editing to make the reading experience better such as making a full paragraph of text on on one line so that it can be wrapped by the reader conversion.

Yes, you can copy files directly to the smartmedia card and you can backup the smartmedia card to your pc. Copying .imp files will cause them to be converted the next time it powers up. Copying folders containing its internal format will update the library the next time it powers up.

Yes, it does fine with large books. Page turns are quick. Restarts from a power off are quick with a return to your exact spot. You can also switch between two books rapidly.
