I think 90% of the problem with pit bulls is the owners. They are the dog of choice for macho types who consider them an extension of their manhood. All too often the people drawn to this breed are themselves aggressive, inconsiderate, and arrogant; and like all dogs, theirs pick up the traits of their owners.
Pit Bulls are not by any means the most likely dogs to bite, but because they are so powerful, when they do bite, folks tend to stay bitten. It doesn't help that there are swaggering and often negligent owners desperately compensating for their own insecurities actively encouraging the worst behavior of which the breed is capable.
How many stories have you read of pit bull attacks, and when the police arrive they find the animal chained in the back yard with no water?
