I have yet to read a review that says the iPad is the Kindle's equal for reading, in anything other than low-light conditions.

And with all due respect, if someone's already bought the iPad, their judgement on the issue might be cloudy. If I plunked down $500 expecting to be able to read just fine on my new device, I'd be very reluctant to admit (to myself or others) that the reading experience wasn't what I'd hoped it was. There's the possibility of cognitive dissonance.

Again, I think it's a different story for someone who was thinking of spending $200 on a Kindle 2. That's not the same kind of financial investment in reading, and I can easily see someone in that camp opting for an iPad instead. But I don't see a potential DX buyer as a potential iPad buyer, because it's a much different mindset, IMO.

I recently had a scare where my Kindle 1 wasn't powering up, and I thought I'd have to decide whether or not to spring for a Kindle 2. (It turned out that I just needed to reset my Kindle.) If I had to decide today betweena Kindle 2 and an iPad, I'd pick the Kindle 2, but that's only out of cost consideration at the moment.
I own a Kindle and an iPad, and have switched over to iPad for all reading. I bought the iPad, figuring I'd try it and resell if I didn't like it, primarily for reading. Turns out I love it for reading, plus a bunch of other stuff. To each his own. "Superior reading experience" is determined only by the individual user, I figure.
