I don't know if its the same in the US, but we see a dumbing down of news all the time here in the UK.

Earlier this week, one of the top 10 headlines on the BBC web site was; "TV star Dec misses England goal". Basically, this was a story about the fact that a very second rate, intellectually-challenged TV presenter had not seen England's goal in the World Cup due to a power cut in the area he was watching the match. IN WHAT UNIVERSE COULD THAT POSSIBLY BE CONSIDERED NEWSWORTHY?

Unfortunately, in the celebrity obssessed, lowest common denominator culture we find ourselves, stories like this could well be considered worthy of greater visibility than alerting readers/viewers to a potentially fascinating natural phenomenon.
