There is no need to keep the plastic sheet on the screen. It is just going to diminish the clarity of the screen. I've had my K1 for over 2 years, and it is the same color that it started out as. My husband's is also the same color. I tend to have pretty clean hands when I'm reading, so I've had no issues with greasy buttons.

I have mine in the standard case that Amazon provided for the K1, but I never drop it or anything. You have to be careful, as you would for any electronic device, especially with a glass screen. I keep mine in my purse all the time, and have had no problems.
