They need to be in .dic format, not .doc format for them to work as dictionaries as far as I know.
You could load them up as .doc books though, although it wouldn't help you search other books through the dictionary menu.
At least, that's how I interpret it.
ETA: I've not converted a dictionary before, but yes, it sounds like these files need to be converted.
