I'm such a new owner that I'm still interested by the existing pictures but I know there'll come a time when I become bored of them. I personally can't see why they didn't just provide a screen saver directory and allow pictures to be stored there. Overall the issue is pretty small change but it shows that Amazon have chosen a wrong path and, even though it's easy for them to change, they are still refusing to fix things and this looks poor in the eyes of a customer like me.
They could then have options on this screen saver directory to:
- download new pictures on a random basis
- download pictures according to the ones you've liked (or hated) in the past - obviously you'd need some method of storing a score for these pictures
- only let the user add pictures to this directory
- a random picture from the users flickr account or their "My pictures" directory
- just automatically download the book cover of the book you're reading
- pull pictures from a particular series ie Escher pictures or XKCD cartoons etc
We'd also need an option to change the picture just in case it's not appropriate but giving users control of their kindle looks like a win-win to me.
