Smith, William: Strata Identified by Organized Fossils. v1, 25 June 2010

Another epub in the history of the geological sciences. This one was published in 1816 in England and was a major achievement in geology. Smith was the first to notice and publish that the occurrences of the same fossils in different parts of England and Wales could be used to identify the sedimentary rocks enclosing them, thereby allowing what is currently known as correlation (or matching of equivalent times of original deposition) of the rocks of different localities.

In addition to the book, Smith also was the first to construct an essentially correct geologic map of all of England and Wales together with part of Scotland.
