Us moderns are really not used to being alone with our thoughts. We have music on cue (unheard of a century ago), other people on cue (talk radio, etc). All so we don't have to rattle around alone, in our own heads.

it is extremely quiet here on my farm. I can hear the birds chirping, the squirrels swearing, the horses moving around, the wind in the trees and so on. I find that quite often when I am alone (which is mostly) I don't have music or TV on. in fact there are times when I am tempted to unplug the fridge as it is intrusive. on the other hand, when I am traveling, or for instance when I was in CA, I had something going almost all the time. I couldn't bear to listen to noise generated by others
