Official specs have it weighing less than the 3G so chances are the 3G interface was removed. I assume that's saving them a nice chunk of change (that and the connectivity) and that's the $50 savings we're seeing.
However, I agree that I won't try softrooting mine until it's tested by someone far braver.
Supposedly mine is shipping tomorrow...fingers crossed!
