To answer the question "who would need additional storage", here are some interesting comments I just read from Amazon:
"As someone who travels frequently, I don't always have the time or resources to go back online and redesign my library. Also, as many travelers know, you do not always know what you will be in the mood for, so it would be nice if you could simply take your memory cards with you. And yes, Mr. Tritschler, even without audio books, there will be those of us who will actually own more than 1500 books eventually. "
I just purchased several Ayn Rand's novels from Audible.com with the highest quality (yes, I do care for my ears) available, each novel alone is about 800 mb in file size.
I can understand why Amazon ignored the needs for expandable memory and user replaceable battery for some business considerations, but honestly cannot understand why an end user does not see such obvious needs.
