Home purchases are done with a notary. No physical money, in any form, changes hands. Only bankaccounts... When I bought my car, I made a phone call to my bank, and asked them to transfer the required money to the car owner.
it's still a major hassle here. I just bought a new/used car. had to go to the bank to get the cashier's check and so on.

I buy my dog and cat food from my friend that does doggy day care. she can take checks which I quit using some time ago, but is not set up for plastic so I always have to remember to get extra cash when I need dog food. also when the dog does board.
