So 1 day later I'm back and they refunded me the GC. Due to the 1st DOA return it took 4 of them about 20 minutes to figure out how to do the refund. I ended up with the $10 difference between $209 and $199 on a GC and the $50 GC charge being refunded to my card.

This experience is very similar to mine. Bought my nook on 6/3. It froze completely on 6/7, when the store exchanged it for a new one. Just now (15 days later) I was at the store and the clerk said that if I had a receipt from the past 14 days, they would refund the price difference. When I showed her my receipts, even though my latest receipt was one day too old, she did refund $10.
I hadn't spent the $50 gift card, but I had redeemed it into my online account. If I'd had the card with me, the clerk said that she could have taken the money back out and refunded me $60. I'm delighted to get the $10, though. It's like they paid me $10 for getting a defective nook on 6/3.
