I do all my personal stuff in excel. It can do more than most proprietory software, you just have to do your own modelling.
(Note to self...get back to reading that huge VBA book now that it is on reader)
For business I found Quickbooks (which is a Quicken product) quite good but like any software has its problems. Being an Ozzie I would probably not be of much use to you as a lot of our stuff is different.
Currently I don't actually sync with the bank etc. I download to Excel then upload to the accounting program.
The only US stuff I have done was in an online program called NetSuite.
I know this probably doesn't help. So here have a puppy.....
