just for the record, although it is surprising in light of the relative ignorance of the general french public with regards to ebooks, they actually have a long history here.

Cytale, creator of the Cybook, founded in Paris in 1998, who were making liseuses back in 1998.

founded in Paris in 2000.

Feedbooks is more recent but arguably unique, and is also french.
I don't know whether any of these were "first" but definitely among the first and certainly proof of a significant history here.
