I think we will see a number of different ideas and combinations appear eventually.

Time has made the iPad a success more than a lot of the other things it does (although it does do them well).

The past has seen technically great products, like Compaq iPaqs and various slate/tablet combinations, but what has really moved on is the availability of data and how it can be moved about, via the internet/networking and wireless means too.

The Apple products have a great user interface which makes ease of use a phrase that can at last be used in a very real sense and as such opens up the data manipulation to eveyone from business users, average users and casual users alike.

I had a Compaq iPaq years ago and although it was good at what it did and the technology was great there was no killer use as the infrastructure wasn't there then to allow a multitude of uses like we have today.
