Well, it's always a risk. I've flashed my PRS600 firmware at least 10 times now, introducing modifications along the way, and so far nothing has gone wrong. If you're careful, follow instructions, don't rush things and don't do anything silly, the risk is, in my opinion, manageable (after all, Sony itself allows you to flash the firmware using their update). The eternal question is whether the risk is worth the reward
