Well for me the random reasons where in cases where there were no pro teams in the state (much less town/city) I was born and raised in. Closest was Pittsburgh (and they don't have pro basketball) and my father hated the Pittsburgh pro teams for whatever reason, so I was left finding teams to root for for reasons other location.

So it's really having a pure love of sports first, then finding the teams to root for. From your post, it just sounds like you've never been in to sports, which is fine. And explains why you don't "get" the passion us sports lovers have for our sports and the teams we follow.
