You'll need to get a US to UK plug adapter (available from any high-street electrical retailer) to use the charger supplied with the Kindle. You can of course also charge it from the USB port of any PC.
The Kindle will read any DRM-free Mobipocket format book (eg the thousands that you can download free here at MobileRead) - you simply transfer the book from the PC to the Kindle via the USB connection.
