It was a bad stick of ram, it took a while to track it down because it hosed my windows install so the system crashed with both of them and i ran memtest for a few hours and reported both sticks as good, once I reinstalled windows and tried both sticks separately one made the system crash and the other didn't.
BTW if anyone is curious, i had no diagnosis about my knee problem, two different specialists couldn't find anything physically wrong with the knee other than it being swollen because of the fluid. After it was drained a second time it stopped producing extra fluid and while its a little stiff it's getting better every day.
The only thing they said that could have caused the swelling was that I either hit or bent the knee the wrong way and didnt think much of it at the time or I was sleeping when it happened.
