I recently finished A Game of Thrones (book 1 of ASOFAI) which I thoroughly enjoyed. Warning: very little magic an monsters, it's more of a medieval-style political intrigue.

Some people have said that the series tails off in later books.

I haven't read any Robert Jordan, but again and again I have heard it said that the first three of four Wheel of Time books are great, but later books are really, really bad.
