Your experience is anomolous. I find that the latest releases are significantly faster than any of the 0.6.x series, and no more RAM hungry.
if nothing is done to track down the cause of your issues then you will be stuck on that older release and thus be unable to enjoy all the new functionality recently added to Calibre which I have found makes it much more useful and enjoyable to use.
