A postscript on this thread ...
I asked artisticforge to run calibre in debug mode and PM me a trace so I could try to understand what was happening in his setup. In a nutshell, he had calibre downloading a dozen or so periodical recipes per day, with approximately 600 accumulated periodicals in his database.
The first time that he ran calibre with a connected device (happened to be an iPad, could have been any device), calibre dutifully followed Preferences|Interface|Automatically send downloaded news to ebook reader, checked in his installation. When calibre finally saw a connected device, it said "hey, I've got a few downloads I've been saving for you ..." and proceeded to send ~600 periodicals to his connected iPad.
If you were unfamiliar with calibre's valiant attempts to deliver the news, this would be startling to say the least.
This seems like an unusual condition, I'm not even sure how I would address it in the iPad FAQ. I suppose one could argue that the default setting for Preferences|Interface|Automatically send downloaded news to ebook reader should be unchecked. (Is it? I'm not sure.)
Anyway, I believe that artisticforge's problem is resolved. In spite of the fact that he intends to run with the iPad driver disabled, his persistence was instrumental in identifying the problem.
