quick look into my Kobo HD.app directory, don't think you can just drop .epub files into it. while there is a Documents/ePubs directory they are organized with a .sqlite database, the file names are all renamed a long hex string and each one has an associated .key file (which seems to contain property lists). I'm guessing the database is only updated when downloading books vs. them just popping up in the directory.
