You pour 3 pints in the 8 container (measuring through the small one), then again, and again. Now the 8 is full and in the 3 you have 1 pint. you discard everything in the 16, pour this one from the 3 and fill it up two more times from the full 8 and add it to the 16. now you have:
3 - empty
8 - 2 pints
16 - 7 pints
