It does work on the 3GS. Should work on the 3G too, I would imagine.

For extended typing sessions on the iPad, I use an old Think Outside BT keyboard I originally bought to use with a Dell Axim. It's great - it's a full-size keyboard, but folds up very compactly for travel and has a little built-in stand that can prop up the iPad in either portrait or landscape. Sadly, they don't make it anymore, but I'd recommend checking eBay if the Apple keyboard doesn't do it for you for some reason.
