If you need to type a lot of text with the iPad, the best way to do it is with a Bluetooth keyboard. The on-screen keyboard is fine for short emails, etc, but you really wouldn't want to write a novel on it. You can have the best of both worlds - the portability of a tablet, and a "proper" keyboard for those occasions when you need it.
