Just trying to make a point, Am.
Your brain picks up on subtle signs.
The less danger in your life, the weaker the warnings.
This may help:

I went shopping with my sister (not the idiot) and her toddler son about 10 years ago at a large shopping center. It was getting dark as we were leaving. The parking structure was multi floored and badly lit. As we were leaving, I went to tie my shoe and told my sister to wait. Of course, she didn't. As I knelt down, I watched my sister head left towards the car. At the very last second before I looked at my shoe, I saw motion on the right. Alarm bells went off in my head and I proceeded after my sister, now being followed by a man in an oversized hooded sweatshirt. He was moving very fast. When my sister reached her car and drew out the keys, he said "Long time no see!" very cheerfully and reached into his sweatshirt pocket. My sister was shocked that he was so close to her. He was shocked when I hit him from behind and drove him headfirst into the bumper. He was a known sex offender and was carrying a knife in his pocket, along with a roll of duct tape. My sister goes nowhere alone now.
Just be safe. Okay?
Pay attention. My sister told me later that she felt nervous, hearing footsteps behind her, but let it go, thinking it was me.
