So the bottom line is that it syncs changes locally to the iPad - no need to copy newer versions of files over. That is managed through an automatic sync. I don't think that iTunes file sharing has that feature - at least not yet.

You can set sync in iTunes to be automatic so I still don't see the point. Personally, when I plug my iPhone and soon my iPad into my laptop, I want to decide whether to sync or not.
