Trickier on a mac. Luckily my wife has a pc laptop so I can use that. When I use my mac I always convert with Calibre. Renaming the file to .zip on a mac does not work well.
Go through Calibre and 'disable font scaling' if that doesn't work just below that box is a font size option. I've changed it to a high font size. You may not be able to change font sizes on the kobo but you can change the font size that it's stuck at. I set mine to 28 in Calibre which works out to be around 'medium' on the kobo.
