It is obviously possible to download a DRM-ridden version directly to your Kindle, but if you want a DRM-free version then the K4PC route you describe seems to be the best available today. There are several reasons why you might want to do this, for example: a) fix any formatting issues, or b) keep an archive copy that Amazon can't screw with, or c) also read on a device from another company.
