At the lower left there is an option to "change background image." I think the background they are showing is a lure. It shows how fancy the google page can look. To change to the other available backgrounds and have other "fancy" images one needs to have a "Google account". If someone likes or wants the other backgrounds then they will become a Google member, if they aren't already. I think this is the motivation behind the decorative background!
Google is a fun-loving bunch at times; as is also evident recently when they had the "Pacman Anniversary" fully functional game on their home search page. I think it is interesting how they have a bit of variety and aren't too stagnant. Still, I don't have a google account of any type and don't wish to at this stage. Thanks for posting about it, WDE!
