B&N is using ePub but with their special brand of DRM. Most of the others can't read it. iRex can. Alex can too I think.

But the important think is Nook can read other ePubs, thus Nook can read nearly all eBooks out there except Kindle ones. Including eBooks from Sony bookstore and Kobo books. That's why I recommend Nook. It can reach its own store which is the biggest and most of the others.
