Calibre (currently) changes the metadata on the device in two cases:
1) when the book is explicitly sent to the device (old)
2) the first time a book on the device is recognized by calibre as being the same as one in the library (new).

Subsequent metadata changes are not sent to the device.

It would be a nice feature to (somehow) determine that the metadata changed and resend it. We would also need to rebuild the Sony collections, which may or may not be something most people want. Regardless, I am not going to do anything about this until the performance issues with Sony devices is resolved, because sending more metadata would simply make it worse.
