To the best of my knowledge (and I wrote the code for the feature), Calibre renames nothing. It opens a folder, point finale.
Any chance your OS renamed it because of a conflict with something else plugged into the machine? I suspect that your PDA is managed by ActiveSync, and who knows what it does.
If you try any more experiments (and I will understand if you don't, but it would help if you did
