They don't. Sony also uses Adobe DRM and the Sony software can be used in place of ADE to download Adobe DRM'd books from other vendors such as Kobo and Books on Board.
ePub's will all have the .epub extension whether using Adobe DRM (Sony, Kobo, BoB, FW, etc.), B&N DRM or DRM free (I assume Apple's ePub's use the same extension too)
