I too grew up with the frustration of starting a good story in Analog and then waiting months to find out how it came out. You might call it "serial avoidance therapy."
Now I read fanfic, and I get frustrated as hell by people who start a roaring good story, lose interest (or write themselves into a corner), and vanish, leaving the story hanging.
So for me, serial = frustration, and I avoid them at all costs.
