Yea, I thought about how to do this. Turns out to be reasonably hard, so I opted for safety.

The process isn't really a merge, but is instead a book-by-book modification. The difficulty is one must delete the old author from all the books referencing it, then apply the new author (which already exists) back to these same books. The trick is to be sure not to change the order of the authors in the process. This was complicated enough where I was worried I would break something fundamental. Another problem that could arise is that the same author now appears twice in the list (both the old and new names are there), and I have no idea what to do about that other than to refuse to modify that book.

Similar problems exist with publishers, series, and tags. Publishers I can see how to do. Tags add complexity, but again, I can see what needs to be done; I would need to delete the old tag from all books, then add the new tag back to those books that don't already have it. However, I think that series will remain manual because of the numbering complexities.

I am still thinking about how to proceed with all this. It will arrive someday.
