It's the competition angle - and being able to boast afterward you hit it.
Years ago I read a tip on toilet-training boys - the mom drained the bowl, painted a bulls-eye target on the back below the water line, and then re-filled the bowl. Then she set up a contest between her 2 sons. Claimed it worked.
