There are seven multitasking APIs - background audio, voip, location services, task finishing, push notifications, local notifications, and fast app switching.
There are people who scoff at this as "fake" multitasking - those people should be ignored. It's the same basic concept as other smartphone OSes with a single-window interface, and should cover 99.9% of use cases.
