Brandon Sanderson's books lately, and I can't recommend him, particularly the Mistborn series, highly enough.
You can download an ebook version of his most recent novel, Warbreaker, for free from his website. He's also got loads of sample chapters for his other books.
He's also been tapped to write the final books in the Wheel of Time series that a number of other posters have already recommended.
