The short answer is maybe. PDF documents come in many different flavors.
Some, and I suspect most manuals might fall into this category, are like whole page screen shots. The text is just part of a picture and has not been OCR'd so you can't search for individual words. You'll be able to zoom in to read the page but that's all.
Other PDF documents, usually recreational reading material, are composed of individual words that can be searched. Zooming is not necessary since they will reflow, i.e. you can change the displayed font size for reading. The number of characters per line, lines per screen, and total number of screens will change with the size selected. I avoided using the work "page" here because that's whole nother subject.
IMHO The Sony touch is much better suited for recreational reading than it is for technical reading. I hope this helps.
