I am not fussed about the format being proprietary so much, as long as companies allow the format to be viewed on as many devices as possible i.e. the approach that amazon have taken with the kindle.
The point about every magazine being readable on every device is the important thing, they can talk about the devices coming free with a subscription but that misses the point that I don't want to carry multiple reading devices and if they try to make me do that then the likely response will be to just get out of the habit of buying a particular magazine.
The other important thing is to get the pricing right and not do anything as stupid as zinio have done with their pricing of sfx:
