It's rarely economic for even the largest of companies to develop specialist tools or components "in house". If my time is being charged to a customer at $500/day, it makes a lot more sense for me to spend $1000 buying in a pre-packaged DRM solution that it does for me to spend a month writing one myself.
I do take your point, though; the customer is naturally going to blame whoever's name is on the label. I was simply questioning whether the blame had been rightly apportioned in this case. It's still unclear to me that Sony should be held solely accountable for it.
