I much prefer reading on the Kindle DX. Yes, the iPad has a bit more "wow" factor when turning pages, and it has colour. However it is heavy, slippery if not in a cover, I experience eye strain after a short period of time (even if I dim the display), the battery does not last long enough on the the road. As all my books are in MOBI format converting to EPUB is a pain. It does not have a native PDF reader. iTunes is a PITA. Last but not least, it is a VERY closed and controlled platform.

The Kindle DX is simple, easy to use, easy to copy content to, can operate standalone if you want, and is significantly cheaper (in Australia anyway).

My recommendation: If you want to read books even PDFs the Kindle/Kindle DX wins hands down over the iPad. If you want to surf the web, read e-mail, and read the odd book, buy a net book. At least it will be able to multi-task and be cheaper.
well I do wish I had known that you could not navigate through pdf toc.
are people really reading big technical manuals on the dx? by no native pdf on the ipad do you mean you pay a buck or something to get a pdf app that you can actually use? or do you mean you cannot read pdf's period on the ipad?
